Bay Area Climbers Coalition is heading back to Mt. Saint Helena at Robert Louis Stevenson State Park in the North Bay on Saturday, May 18 to host an Adopt-A-Crag in partnership with Rock Ice & Mountain (RIM) Club and California State Parks!
Mount Saint Helena at Robert Louis Stevenson State Park is one of the Bay Area’s premier sport climbing crags. With tons of routes across a wide range of difficulty, it has something for everyone and attracts climbers from all over the region.
In 2017, Mount Saint Helena and the surrounding areas were hit hard by the North Bay Fires. The local climbing community has done an awesome job of restoring the damaged crags, but there’s still work to do. The entire area needs our love, attention, and care.
Volunteers are needed on Saturday 5/18 from 9am-1pm to help with the following projects at Mount Saint Helena:
- Glass and trash clean-up
- Clearing of debris from trails
- Trail maintenance
We ask that you bring a water bottle and wear closed-toe shoes, a long sleeve shirt, and pants, as poison oak does exist in some areas. Please consider carpooling, as the parking lot is very small. We encourage you to chat with other volunteers and coordinate rides within the Facebook event. Gloves, tools and lunch will be provided. Bring your own climbing gear for any post-event crushing at Mount Saint Helena (climbing is not a part of this event, but you are welcome to go on your own afterwards!) Clean-up will conclude around 1 pm.

Logistics
Meeting Point – On 5/18 we’ll meet at the Mount Saint Helena Trailhead, right off of Highway 29. Use caution, as some drivers take the road pretty fast. Due to limited parking, carpooling is HIGHLY recommended. If you’re looking for a good meeting spot, we recommend meeting across the street from CalMart in Calistoga, and driving one car up the mountain!
Safety – We are HUGE on safety! There will be a safety talk at 9am on the day of the event. We require all participants to be present for the safety talk and wear closed toe shoes, otherwise you will not be allowed to participate.
Food – Coffee, lunch, and snacks will be provided for all volunteers. Please let us know if you have dietary restrictions.
Water – Please bring your own water bottle with at least 1 liter of water! We will be able to provide some additional water, but cannot promise refills for everyone.
Tools – We will be providing tools and gloves, but you’re welcome to bring your own work gloves if you prefer.
Bathrooms – We plan to have a portable toilet on site, but in the interest of keeping things clean, please plan to go before the event if possible!
Clothing – Sturdy, closed toe shoes are mandatory. Work gloves, long sleeve shirts, long pants. a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are all highly recommended. Poison oak has been seen in the area, so be prepared!
